MaridasPoulle was born in Pondicherry in the year 1721. He was one of the pioneer Indologists of the eighteenth century. He was the first to translate the complete text of an Indian literature into an European language, as is demonstrated by his translation of the BhagavataPurana from Tamil into French in the 1760s. J.B.P.More had re-edited this translation with an Introduction and an Index so that the public and the scholars become aware of the greatness of MaridasPoullé as a pioneer Indologist. As a matter of fact, MaridasPoullé had undertaken to translate an Indian literature into a European language well before Alexander Dow or William Jones or AnquetilDuperron.
